Thermo-tectonic development of the Wandel Sea Basin, North Greenland

The Carboniferous–Palaeogene Wandel Sea Basin of eastern North Greenland (north 80°N, east 40°W) is an important piece in the puzzle Arctic geology. It particularly for understanding how Paleocene–Eocene convergence between Greenland, Canadian and Svalbard relates to compressional tectonics High Arctic, collectively known as Eurekan Orogeny. In this study, we present apatite fission-track analysis (AFTA) data review published vitrinite reflectance combined with observations from stratigraphic record place firmer constraints on timing key tectonic events. This research study reveals a long history episodic burial exhumation since collapse Palaeozoic fold belts Greenland. Our results define pre-Cenozoic episodes early Permian, Late Triassic, Jurassic mid-Cretaceous times, each involving removal kilometre-scale sedimentary covers. Mid-Paleocene defines compression along major fault zones during first stage Orogeny, after onset sea-floor spreading west Regional that began at end Eocene led most kilometre-thick cover had accumulated subsidence involved reverse movement Harder Fjord Fault Zone, northern Peary Land. These events took thus, represent post-Eurekan tectonics. Mid–late Miocene likely consequence uplift incision across area. preserved sequences remnants thicker strata extended substantially beyond present-day outline basin. We find basin scattered outliers primarily result inversion followed by deposition overburden.
